The Afghan Whigs es una banda de rock alternativo formada en Cincinnati en 1986 y compuesta por Greg Dulli (vocalista, guitarrista), John Curley (bajista), Rick McCollum (guitarrista) y Steve Earle (baterista).Los comienzos de la banda son casi un mito. La leyenda habla de un encuentro en un calabozo entre Dulli y el excelente guitarrista Rick McCollum, pero la realidad parece ser mucho más convencional. Dulli, criado en el seno de una familia católica de clase trabajadora de Cincinnati (Ohio), después de fallidos intentos de encajar en la escuela de cine local (de donde sería expulsado por la truculencia de sus cortometrajes) y en una escuela de interpretación en Los Ángeles, decide abandonar por el momento sus cinematográficos sueños y concentrarse en su otra gran pasión: la música. Sus primeros escarceos se produjeron en los Black Republicans, pero rápidamente se unió a McCollum y al orondo bajista John Curley para formar una banda; cuyo nombre robaron de una banda de motoristas de los setenta, pacifistas, musulmanes y, por supuesto, negros: The Afghan Whigs.
